Intel changes the name of its processors: goodbye Core i3/i5/i7/i9

It’s the end for Core i3, i5, i7 and i9 processors, Intel has decided to drop the letter “i”. Now on to Core 3, 5, 9 and 7 processors. There is also a Core Ultra line to add to the list.

This announcement from Intel comes less than a year after the company decided to drop the Pentium and Celeron brands for its mobile chips. She said that starting this year, these chips will simply be called Intel processors.

The new processor names will therefore drop the “i” which has been part of the brand for some time now. Starting with Meteor Lake based processors, Intel will only name them with numbers (3/5/7/9). The generation number will still be part of the processor number but it will no longer be used in front of the name.

Going forward, the Intel Core line will be reserved for the company’s most common chips, while the new Core Ultra brand will be reserved for “processors for the most advanced customers” depending on the company. For Caitlin Anderson, vice president and general manager of sales at Intel, these changes should make it easier for buyers of computers based on Intel technology to know what type of CPU is included:

Our customer roadmap shows how Intel prioritizes innovation and technology leadership with products like Meteor Lake, focused on energy efficiency and AI at scale. To better align with our product strategies, we are implementing a brand structure that will help PC buyers better differentiate the best of our latest technology and consumer offerings.
