Instagram Update: Feed Gets Messier – Here’s How You Can Customize It

Instagram feed update: timeline gets messier

The popular photo service has been tinkering in the background a lot lately. This is often not possible without quite a bit of comment from the users. For example, many Instagrammers have already complained about the hefty amount of random videos that are now popping up in their Instagram feed.

Especially for the people who use Instagram to view photos of their friends and family, things have gotten a lot worse in recent months. That’s because Instagram shows content in your timeline from accounts you don’t follow. Instagram’s algorithm then determines which photos and videos may be of interest to you.

More than twice as many recommended posts on Instagram

If you found that annoying, then Mark Zuckerberg (the owner of Facebook and Instagram, among others) has even more annoying news for you. Speaking to investors, he said there are plans to include more than twice as much recommended content in your Instagram feed. This will make your Instagram timeline even cluttered and you will see even fewer posts from your friends and accounts that you do follow.

According to Zuckerberg, about 15 percent of your Instagram timeline is currently filled by the algorithm. By the end of 2023, that should therefore be more than 30 percent. This is the opposite of what users of the photo service actually want: see more posts from friends and get fewer recommendations pushed.

Instagram looks more and more like TikTok

Even popular Instagrammers like Kim Kardashian asked Instagram to “look less like TikTok.” Still, Instagram doesn’t seem to be going any other way. Actually, that’s not so surprising, because TikTok has grown considerably in recent years and Meta (the parent company of Instagram) is only too happy to get a piece of that. So far without much success.

Instagram feed: adjust timeline

At this point, your Instagram timeline is already pretty full of posts from recommended accounts and suggested posts. However, there is (for now) a way to only view the posts of the people you follow. You do that in the following way.

• Launch the Instagram app;
• Tap the logo with the house at the bottom left;
• Then tap the Instagram logo at the top left;
• Choose the option ‘Next’ in the menu that appears.

You will now see your Instagram timeline with only posts from people you follow. However, it is unknown whether Instagram will keep the timeline customization feature in forever with the future doubling of the number of recommended posts…
