Forgetting your wallet when shopping and still being able to pay at the checkout – this works very easily with mobile payment. Because you can use it to make contactless payments via smartphone or smartwatch. We’ll show you how to set up Apple Pay on your device.

For a long time, payment at German cash registers was only possible in cash or by card. But for a few years now you have also been able to pay for your purchases with your smartphone or smartwatch.

Mobile payment solutions are also becoming more and more popular. Proof of cash and card payment in one Statista survey still the first two places for the most popular payment methods.

But mobile payment is now catching up with 18 percent and fourth place. Both 28 to 34 year olds paying with mobile devices already reaches 23 percent.

If you want to pay at the checkout with your mobile device in the future, it depends on the manufacturer of your devices. If you use Apple mobile devices, you can set up Apple Pay on these devices.

Here’s how to set up Apple Pay

If you want to set up Apple Pay, you not only need a compatible device from Apple. You will also need a debit, credit or prepaid card that you can store in your wallet app.

Set up Apple Pay on iPhone

Navigate to your Wallet app to set up Apple Pay on your iPhone. In the upper right corner you will find a small plus icon that you can use to add new cards.

Here you can choose what type of card you want to add. Select “Debit or Credit Card” and in the next window look for the provider that issued your card.

In the next step, you can either scan your card using the camera or enter the card data manually. Finally, you need to verify your information about your card issuer.

Use Apple Pay on the Apple Watch

If you use an iPhone and have stored a card in Apple Pay here, you can also add it to your smartwatch. If not, you can set up Apple Pay through your Apple Watch app on your paired iPhone.

In the “My Watch” tab, click on “Wallet & Apple Pay”. Here you select the item “Add card” and then follow the steps as for the setup on the iPhone.

Apple Pay also works on MacBook or iPad

But you can not only pay with iPhone or Apple Watch via Apple Pay on the go. This also works on your MacBook or iPad.

For this you have to open your settings. On the MacBook you navigate to your system settings and look for the sub-item “Wallet & Apple Pay”. On the iPad, you can find this menu directly in your settings.

Again, click on “Add card” and then follow the next steps.

How does Apple Pay work?

Apple Pay works similarly to contactless payment, which you can now use with almost any debit, credit or prepaid card.

If you see the symbols for contactless payments in a shop, you can also easily pay here with an iPhone or Apple Watch.

To do this, double-click the side button on your device. If you have an iPhone with a home button, you have to press it twice. You will then be shown the map that you have set as the default map.

Now hold the upper end of your iPhone or Apple Watch near the contactless reader. If the message “Done” appears on the display with a tick, payment has been made.

Set up Apple Pay: You must meet these requirements

In order to be able to use Apple Pay on your device, you have to meet a few requirements. First of all, it’s important that your bank supports the use of Apple Pay – because not all card issuers do that yet.

You also need an Apple ID that you used to log in to your Apple device. But if you use Apple devices, this requirement should be met anyway.

Lastly, you need to check if your device is compatible with Apple Pay. Apple provides for this an overview available. You must also have the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, or macOS installed.
