Important change affects millions of users

It cost 220 million euros, and it will soon be put into sleep mode: the Corona warning app will stop several functions from June. The app will only be reactivated if the infection situation worsens.

Corona warning app: sleep mode from June

The Corona warning app should not be continued as before. In June 2023 she will be put into sleep mode, as the current Covid infection situation no longer justifies continued operation. The warning function for users should only remain active until April 30th. In May, the app will be prepared for sleep mode, from June 1st certain functions of the app will then no longer be available.

No further updates can be expected after June 1st. But the app can for electronic vaccination certificates still be used. They remain in the Corona-Warn-App (source: time online).

The Federal Ministry of Health reports that the app quickly reactivated if the infection situation in Germany worsens. The application has been installed on over 48 million devices over time. Almost nine million users have shared positive test results to warn other users.

The decision to put the Corona-Warn-App in sleep mode drew mixed reactions. Some welcome the action as a necessary step given the current infection situation during others argue that the app still needs it becomes. The FDP had already described the app as superfluous in January 2023.

Corona warning app: costs of 220 million euros

Between June 2020 and December 2022, the app for development and operating costs of about 220 million euros have taken care of. SAP and T-Systems developed the Corona warning app together. The contracts with the service providers end on May 31st.
