If you have a gas heater, you need to know that up-to-date

Gas is getting more and more expensive. Many people are already dreading the next heating season, which will begin in the not too distant future. The federal government has decided that owners of gas heaters have responsibilities that they must carry out. But you don’t have to wait if you want to save now.

Heating check becomes mandatory

If you own a gas heater and are worried about the future, then you are like millions of people in Germany. From October 1, 2022, every homeowner will be required to have a to have the heating checked. This is intended to optimize gas consumption, for example by adjusting the flow temperature. This saves a lot of gas in the long run, because most heating systems in Germany are set to comfort, so that the high-performance heating quickly heats the radiators and the water.

With a few settings, you can save a lot of gas without having to forego a lot of comfort. For example, the flow temperature in gas condensing boilers can be significantly reduced. Normally 60 degrees or more are set. Experts say 40 degrees is enough. I’ve been using it for a few months now and hardly notice a difference. The water in the shower isn’t quite as hot as it used to be, but it’s still very warm.

Important: If you have a hot water tank, the temperature must not be set below 60 degrees, otherwise legionella could form. The only way to save gas is to not turn the faucet to full hot water immediately, but to a lower level so that the preheated water is used first and the boiler does not start immediately. By the time the water heated with it reaches you, you have long since washed your hands and a lot of energy is lost.

Carry out the heating check yourself

If you have the operating instructions for your gas heater, you can carry out the most important settings yourself. I worked my way up to the right settings step by step. So I always lowered the flow temperature by 5 degrees until I got to 40 degrees. 35 degrees, which is the minimum for me, was just not enough for me. It got very cold in the shower. But 40 degrees is nice and warm and I save gas.

Furthermore you can Set the reduced temperature and heating curve. Both important points that determine when the gas heater kicks in to generate heat for the heater. I set 18 degrees and 1.5 minutes. Here, heating professionals also recommend significantly more conservative settings. In some cases, a reduced temperature of 8 degrees is even recommended, since the daily average applies here. For the heating curve, I initially doubled it to 3 minutes. But I can’t give you an estimate of what’s right. In the summer I turn off the heating completely. I’ll write another report on that in the winter.

What are the heating costs of the different methods:

Important: It is best to take photos of the settings you had before. You can always go back if something doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to. But you shouldn’t fiddle around with the heater. This is only about settings that can be made with the rotary controls or the small control panel. For all other work you have to get a professional. So you can have the settings done and save a lot of money. I already saved a lot of money with the settings beforehand.
