If you do nothing, your account will be deleted

If you have Google accounts that you haven’t used in a while but don’t want to lose, then you need to take action now. Google has announced that inactive accounts will be deleted.

Google will delete old accounts

Google accounts are free and many of you may have created a few in the past but only use one account. If, for example, you have secured e-mail addresses that you have not used for a long time, then you should take action now at the latest. Google announced that from December 2023 is started delete old accounts (Source: Google).

All Google accounts that you have not logged into in the past two years are affected. If the account is deleted, then all associated services and content will also be removed. These include Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, YouTube, and Photos. Often you have uploaded data to Google Drive or photos to Google Photos on an old account that you have long forgotten. It is therefore important that you think carefully about whether you still have anything on old accounts.

The step is justified with your security. Google says that the longer an account is left idle, the more likely it is that it has been compromised. Especially if old passwords were used that appeared somewhere due to security gaps. Two-factor authentication is usually not activated either. However, Google will not simply delete the accounts, but will inform you about this several times beforehand.

This is how you can prevent deletion

To prevent your unused Google account from being deleted, all you have to do is use it once. So register somewhere with it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re just reading your emails or watching a YouTube video. The main thing is that you register once if you want to keep the account.
