‘I still wanted to pretend it was fashion’

Every month a mother talks about the moment in motherhood when things went completely wrong.

Rianne (41), married to Thijs (47) and mother of Rijk and Doris (1):

“With twins of over one and a half years old and a job that is less than two hours away from home, the mornings at our house are generally quite hectic. On days when I work in the office, the alarm goes off at a quarter past six so I can take a quick shower and put on some make-up before waking the kids.

I always really get dressed just before I go out the door and when they have a clean diaper on, have been hoisted into an outfit and have had breakfast. It has happened to me a little too often that otherwise there was already poop, snot or pieces of bread with dairy spread on my clean set and I could start again.

Hysterical morning

This was also the case this morning, which was even more hysterical than average. The kids messed with their bread and threw their water bottles, meanwhile the dog was bothering the cat and I also tried to prepare lunch for myself in between. The fact that we were nevertheless in the car on time to the train station and the nursery – my husband always drops me off at the station first and then takes the children to their toddler group – can be called a miracle. I even managed to get a coffee before boarding the train.

Fashion statement

There I was, quite pleased with myself, in a beautiful new dress, which I had picked up a week earlier at a sample sale. And only then did I see what I had on my feet. Not the cream-colored heeled boots I’d left by the door. Instead, I still had my slippers on.

I then had to keep it on all day, because there are no shops in the wide vicinity of my office, only houses and a few garden centers. I considered pretending it was a fashion statement, but figured I wouldn’t get away with it. So now I’m the woman who went to work in slippers. Oh well, there are worse things, right?”
