“I signed out with a ‘severe migraine attack'”

Sure, it’s not quite neat, that truancy. But sometimes as a mother you also want a day off. And just hope you don’t run into anyone.

Gwenn (34), mother of sons Rick (8) and Tim (6):

“The nursery was closed for a day, but I had missed the memo and had to go home with two children that morning. My manager had already made me difficult a few times when I wanted time off because of the kids, so I signed off with a “severe migraine attack” to which she wished me the best of luck.

Red-handed

In the afternoon the ice rink opened in our town. I took Rick and Tim along and was so busy teaching them how to skate that I didn’t notice any pictures being taken. Photos that were pontifically put on Facebook.

“The next day I saw a picture online of children on the ice rink, with me as the radiant center”

The next day at work I opened the local news site and saw a picture of kids on the ice rink, with me as the radiant center. My manager never said anything about it, but recently she asked if I always recover quickly after an attack. I quickly stammered something about miracle pills.”

Caught in the bath

Lotte (29), mother of daughter Pippa (1):

“On my day off I just took Pippa to daycare. I was looking forward to a day in the bath, reading magazines and Netflix undisturbed. I told her teachers that I had to work, for fear that they would think I was a degenerate mother.

“It felt like I had skipped school”

But unfortunately Pippa suddenly got feverish and had a cold, so the teachers called my work. To which my colleague casually said: ‘Joh Lotte is nice and free’. Then when I got a call on my mobile asking if I could come pick up Pippa, it felt like I had been playing hooky.”
