‘I just ignored the disapproving looks’

Parents are sometimes superheroes and sometimes they are tired creatures who sometimes slip up in an attempt to keep all the balls in the air.

Ruud (35), father of Inez (3) and Loïs (1):

“I was with our daughters in a playground and texted a nice photo to my wife, who was having a drink with her friends somewhere. I only got smileys back, followed by the question why I had hoisted Inez in Loïs’s baby jacket. I thought it was a bit tight and I could barely close the zipper, but in my hurry I just fished one off the coat rack. I ignored the disapproving looks of other parents in the playground.”

Pick up trick

Daan (44), father of Julie (9) and Rosa (7):

“As a freshly divorced father, I was flirting with a girl behind the bar at a festival. I ordered a round of beer for my friends and put down a handful of coins. She tasted it. Because between those coins were all pink rubber bands and pins from the girls. They were still in my pocket. She handed me my beer with a wink and said, “Have a good time, Dad.” I laughed out loud myself.”

Nice and warm

Kelly (36), mother of Esmay (12) and Stijn (10):

“When I was heavily pregnant with Stijn, I rolled off the couch with laughter when my husband came home after he had gone to refuel. “You’ll never guess how I got to the gas station,” he said. Dryly I replied: “By car, I assume?” In the meantime, he also doubled up laughing and pointed to his feet. Only then did I see it: he was still wearing his bright yellow clog slippers.”

Extra screen time

Alexander (36), father of Joram (3):

“In the supermarket, Joram walked straight to the video screen. After all, watching a movie is more fun than shopping with your father. It wasn’t until I came home with bags full and asked my wife where Joram was that I realized I hadn’t taken him with me. I’ve never been back to the store so quickly. By the way, he sat well and unsuspectingly in front of the screen.”
