Linda Poucochinho (41, owns a webshop and wholesaler of Portuguese products, lives with Sergio) saves owls. Her children Chimaero (17), Valkyrja (15), Nyachdi (13), Qirinye (12) come from a previous relationship. With Sergio she has son Deagão (19 months) and he even has a teething ring with an owl.
“As you may see in my children’s names, I love fantasy, fairy tales and legends. I like the mystical. An owl has that too, something mysterious and magical. Like the owl in Harry Potter and the owls that wizards in fairy tales always have on their shoulders.
Some people may like their sound spooky, but I think it’s really beautiful. I’m not afraid of owls. I’ve also had one on my arm once, with a lady from our village who has an animal shelter.

As a child I had an owl hug. When I was a teenager I got a boyfriend who was crazy about monkeys. He bought owls for me and I bought monkeys for him. That’s how it grew. Friends came with holiday souvenirs with an owl on them, I sometimes bought something myself at a flea market. My grandmother even embroidered big samplers with owls for me. They still hang on the wall and are dear to my heart.

Each begging owl represents a milestone in my life: that I passed my final exam and my driver’s license, and also that I became a mother of course. I think it is now worth a few thousand euros, but the special thing is not in the value, but in the thought behind it.

Sergio and the kids don’t like owls. I used to sometimes give them a coloring page with an owl. Deagão has a teething ring and an owl hug, but I might as well buy him something with Woezel and Pip or dragons.

My owls are everywhere, but they don’t immediately catch the eye. Yet I now have a total of 1300, large and small. I had a few hundred in a display case, but it just came off the wall. Collapsed under the weight. There were then 150 killed. I didn’t cry, but I was very disappointed for two days. From now on I will distribute them even better to prevent something like this from happening to me again.”
