‘I bumped into my daughter’s teacher during the party’

If your immediate family doesn’t understand that you still have a life after the divorce, or you sometimes color outside the lines, you better enjoy your hard-earned freedom.

Lily (33), mother of Maeve (5) and Boyd (4):

“Very often I color outside the lines. shoot me. My ex and I are co-parenting and now that I miss my kids half the time, I better make the most of it. I was at a festival and yes, I had something more than just a beer. With a bunch of friends I enjoyed the freedom, music, the sun, the love.

Somewhat under the influence I kissed a dear friend. And bumped into my daughter’s teacher in the festivities. She – also recently divorced – was clearly on the same cloud.

Shocked but understanding, we squeezed each other’s arms and continued on our way. Our relationship was optimal for the rest of the year. What can I say: she is my favorite teacher.”

Yet another

Annette (39), mother of Nils (10) and Fynn (8):

“’Why aren’t we with Aunt Fiona this Christmas?’ my eldest son asked me on the slopes. Since we’re skiing, I lied. The fact was that we would have made that trip anyway, but preferably outside of Christmas. My sister’s husband just couldn’t handle my partner, the fourth since my divorce. His children did not understand that Aunt An had ‘another man’, he judged.

“When Uncle Lars gets divorced, he can take whoever he wants with him”

Such views are fortunately foreign to my children. And who they take to the Christmas table later on can be different every year. ‘When Uncle Lars gets divorced, he can take whoever he wants with him,’ Nils soothed. I could laugh at his attentiveness, and above all his free spirit.”
