‘I am always concerned with my child’s health’
When you always have to keep an eye on whether your child is doing well, it is extra difficult to grab some me-time every now and then.
Shirin (33), mother of Kian (7).
“Because my son has multiple disabilities, I really need me-time. Kian can just get sick and then we are back on the rollercoaster of hospitals. I try to do yoga twice a week and kickboxing once a week, in which I can release my aggression. My husband and I have regular times when we exercise, he does crossfit and squash.
Letting go can still be difficult, though. I know I’m leaving my son in good hands, but I’m a control freak when it comes to his nutrition and I’m always concerned about his health. But sometimes it’s nice to not be busy with caring for our son. My husband and I both recharge from that.”

Time for ourselves
Sarah (32), mother of Mirthe (7).
“Every month our daughter goes to a guest house, where she stays for a weekend. It is the house where she also spends her daytime activities during the week. She has multiple disabilities and during such weekends we have time for ourselves. Then we go away for a weekend, visit without our child who needs a lot of attention or we dive into the city, to a concert or the theater.”
