Huawei Mate 50: an immortal battery and communications without a network!?

On the roof of the world in 2019, the Chinese firm Huawei, suspected of espionage by the Trump administration, was forced to separate from GApps, Google’s proprietary applications: Gmail, Maps, YouTube, etc. It’s not very embarrassing for a Chinese who doesn’t use these things anyway, but very problematic for the majority of Europeans who wouldn’t know how to do without them (although it is clearly possible). Huawei is therefore discreet with us, but recently the company announced its Huawei Mate 50, a flagship which a priori does not stand out from the others: Snapdragon 8+ Gen1, 8 GB of RAM, AMOLED Full HD+ 120 Hz screen and a part solid photo with a main sensor that offers an adjustable aperture from f/4 to f/1.4.

3 hours of battery with 1%

However, the Mate 50 series offers two features that deserve attention. The first is an immortal battery! Well, we’re exaggerating a bit. Imagine running out of your gauge, but still having to send a message or make a call. With the Mate 50, this is possible since even at 1%, the device allows you to operate in “survival” mode with a deactivation of all unnecessary services, a drop in voltage and in the end enough energy to do more one or two things: look at your location, make a call, send an SMS or scan a QR code. This Emergency Battery Mode allows you to remain on standby for 3 hours and talk for 12 minutes. When there’s more, there’s more.

Satellite messages!

The other feature that makes noise is the ability to communicate, even without a mobile network. Here too, it is a marketing announcement, but which nevertheless turns out to be interesting. Thanks to its new antennas (the same as those of the iPhone 14), the Huawei Mate 50 can send a emergency message via satellite ! Certainly you have to be able to see the sky and this function allows you to send a message and not to receive it, but you have to salute the performance.

With the Huawei Mate 50, you can therefore send a distress message in the jungle and without a battery. Long live progress.
