How to use WhatsApp as a calendar

WhatsApp, own chat: For a few months now, you have been able to exchange messages with yourself on WhatsApp. What was previously only possible via detours is now a feature. And: Your own WhatsApp chat is the perfect calendar. A personal anecdote.

How often does it happen in everyday life that a flash of inspiration comes to you and you don’t have a pen or piece of paper at hand? Good ideas are particularly popular at night or in the shower when your thoughts are really free.

The problem with this: It is tedious to keep a written calendar. And the digital alternative – the calendar on your smartphone – needs more than one click to save a reminder. This is more than unfavorable, especially when you are half asleep.

Create your own WhatsApp chat: Here’s how

Fortunately, a practical alternative has been available for a few months now. The combination is simple: WhatsApp, own chat, done. Since end of 2022 WhatsApp has started rolling out the ability for you to message yourself on WhatsApp.

If you want to create your own WhatsApp chat, you just have to follow these steps:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your smartphone.
  2. Click on the pencil icon in the top right corner to open a new chat.
  3. Find your own name in the address list and click on it.

A new WhatsApp chat will open. In this you can now communicate with yourself and, in theory, even comment on your own messages.

WhatsApp, own chat: The ideal calendar and to-do list app

With this small but fine feature, WhatsApp upgrades itself enormously – and probably not even consciously or with great intention. After all, the messenger’s development team could care less whether users can write to themselves or not.

However, by giving us all the option to create our own WhatsApp chat, parent company Meta gives us the perfect tool.

Own chat on WhatsApp: fix tasks and mark favorites

Instead of typing a note into your calendar, all you have to do is quickly write yourself a message. You can also always pin your own chat to the top so that you can always see your own to-do list at the top of the chat history using the pin function.

Within your own conversation, you can create a substructure. You can easily do this by marking certain messages as favorites in your chat history. If there are updates on specific events, you can update them yourself with a comment.

WhatsApp, own chat – accessible on all devices

The proverbial crown of your own WhatsApp chat is actually the cross-device synchronization of the messenger. This means that if you send yourself a message on your smartphone, you can also see it on your desktop screen a few seconds later.

In many calendars or technical situations – iPhone as a smartphone, Windows as a PC system – this does not work or only with difficulty.

And: If we are honest with ourselves, we probably open our chat overview on WhatsApp more often than our calendar. So what speaks against changing the system?
