Disappearing messages WhatsApp

WhatsApp already has a function to make messages disappear automatically. Tapping on someone’s name on top of an individual chat brought you the option ‘Messages with Expiration’. This will automatically delete all messages from the chat after seven days.

Now WhatsApp adds a new default setting, where you automatically delete future messages from all chats after a period of time. You can choose an expiry date of 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. The messages disappear at both the sender and receiver.

Automatically delete WhatsApp messages

WhatsApp is currently rolling out, so there’s a chance you won’t see the option yet. But at least it can be found here:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap ‘Settings’ from the main screen at the bottom right;
  2. Tap ‘Account>Privacy’;
  3. Choose ‘Default message timer’;
  4. Select 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days.

The setting doesn’t affect messages you’ve previously received or sent, so they’ll still be visible. When you start a new chat, you’ll see a notification that the disappearing messages feature is turned on. You also have the option to disable the individual chats setting.

group chats

The setting to automatically delete WhatsApp messages does not affect group chats. WhatsApp has also added an option there, so that you can enable the disappearing messages function. However, the group admin can set only admins to enable or disable the Expired Messages feature.
