how is the best photo car?
Huawei was well on its way to becoming a leader in Android phones before Donald Trump or the United States threw a fork into their relatively successful goal. He sold really good phones, not only in the middle class, but also in the flagship segment. The Huawei P40 series was the first flagship that did not have Google services, and the company felt it on sales outside China. However, she did not give up her fight and brought the Huawei P50 Pro model to the European market. This flagship phone boasts several positives, but it also has (for us) even pointless disadvantages. So let’s dive into the review together.

Review content Huawei P50 Pro
Package Contents Huawei P50 Pro
Huawei P50 Pro came to us in a nice paper box, which made us a great first impression and it continued even after the opening. Outside the phone, you will find it silicone coverwhich comes in handy due to the shiny back of the phone. Of course we can (ehm..Apple and Samsung) also count on 66W charging adapter, USB-A / USB-C charging cable and SIM card eject clip. Apparently no one counts on headphones nowadays.
The design and appearance of the Huawei P50 Pro
Although it may not seem so at first glance, the Huawei P50 Pro is quite a unique and well-designed phone for us. Gone are the days when manufacturers tried to curve the display to the sides. Was it impractical? Probably yes. That’s why almost every mobile phone today has a flat screen, so you’ll know the Huawei P50 Pro at first. We personally got used to it in a few hours and there were no unwanted touches.
The back of the phone is glossy, which again does not add to the practicality, but if you decide to use the included case, it will not be a problem. Otherwise Prepare for daily (or more frequent) polishing. Take a picture of the camera design yourself. We personally like it, but we’ve come across opinions that the phone looks awful. There was even a discussion about it in our newsroom. Otherwise, the phone holds very well in your hand. The buttons are located just right and the size of the saddle. The dimensions specifically make up 158,8 x 72,8 x 8,5 mm.
Of course, there are premium materials such as glass or aluminum. The Huawei P50 Pro really gives the impression of a flagship. And that’s the way it should be. On the bottom, in addition to the microSIM drawer, there is also a USB-C connector and one of two stereo speakers. The control buttons are on the right.
Huawei P50 Pro display
The word in the previous paragraphs has already been mentioned about the display. The dominant feature of the Huawei P50 Pro is 6.6 ″ OLED display with 2700 x 1228 pixels resolution and 120Hz refresh rate and 300Hz sampling rate. Unfortunately, we did not manage to find the official maximum brightness number, but it is more than sufficient. Unfortunately, we could not try it in direct sunlight, as it was cloudy all week, but we had no problem with readability in the light. We also appreciate the low minimum brightness, which can be useful for reading in bed, for example.
Thanks to the high refresh rate, the display is of course extremely smooth and the sampling rate is not the best, but it is still above average, and thanks to this, various games are enjoyable on the phone. However, fluency is also aided by a well-tuned system. But about him later. The display disturbs the shot in the middle, in which we find 13Mpx selfie camera with aperture of f / 2.4. It can capture a lot of detail in the face (sometimes unnecessarily much) and produces very good images. Of course, you will also find a fingerprint reader on the display, which works reliably and quickly. After all, we would not expect anything else from the phone in this price category.
Hardware Huawei P50 Pro
Under the hood of the Huawei P50 Pro is ticking the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, which was not usual before. The Chinese company made its own Kirin chipset for its mobile phones, which is, however, only present in the Chinese version. We are able to forgive the phone for not having a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1. It was on the market at a time when this chip was only speculated.
But what we don’t understand is lack of support for 5G networks. At least in the global market you would be from the flagship that stands CZK 29,990 they took a similar trait for granted. In our case, the chipset is supported by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. In the Geekbench benchmark, the phone earned a score in a single-core test 911 points, in multicore then 3423 points.
To put the performance into context, the Galaxy S21 Ultra with Exynos scored 3,085 points in a multi-core test, but the new Xiaomi 12 with a new chip from Qualcomm boasted 4,138 points. So the numbers are not completely top, on the other hand, the phone does not have a problem with any demanding game and even after a longer, more demanding use, it does not get warm.
Huawei P50 Pro battery life
The battery life in the Huawei P50 Pro is taken care of by a 4360mAh battery. We ourselves had some doubts about whether such capacity would be enough in combination with the relatively voracious Snapdragon. Fortunately, the phone is very optimized and the system can work great with the processor. If you keep the automatic brightness on and use the phone like the majority of the population, which in practice means browsing social networks, communicating through various messengers, reading the web and occasional photo shoots, your phone will last for a day and a half full and we’re convinced that if you’d like, you’ll be able to get back to power for two days. But that wouldn’t make much sense.
If you run out of juice, it makes more sense to put the phone in the charger for a while. You will charge it with the included adapter from 0 to 100% according to our measurement in 53 minutes. We tried charging from 20 to 80%, which took a decent 25 minutes. This is how we charged the phone most often. If you are interested, you can also charge the phone with 50W wireless charging.
User interface
After the initial setup of the phone, you will be greeted by the superstructure EMUI 12, which runs on Android 11. In terms of fluidity and tuning itself, Huawei has handled it excellently. After Pixels, we would give the EMUI a silver medal for tuning and fluency. The system is very similar to HarmonyOS, which we find in the Chinese version, and in our opinion it is only a matter of time before this system reaches Europe.
However, you can’t miss the pile of applications that comes pre-installed. There are too many of them. We don’t understand at all why we want to have them on the phones pre-installed TikTok or Snapchat. If you use it often Google services, you can immediately forget about the phone. An application may be a partial solution Gspacewhich can run Google applications separately, but applications (at least in our case) crash quite often and you have to pay for the application before each launch 420 CZK.
In addition, we sent a message from Google Chat that appeared to be on your phone, even though the recipients did not come at all. Probably fine as an emergency solution, but if you use the services of an American company on a daily basis, we would look elsewhere.
We will stay with the ads for a while. It is located in an application that you would definitely not expect. Almost every time the Huawei AppGallery is launched, a store that should eventually compete with Google Play and the App Store You’ll see an ad that can be skipped in up to five seconds. This is usually for some more or less known application. We wouldn’t even accept such a thing on a phone for a few thousand, let alone at a flagship that trusts the iPhone 13 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 or Google Pixel 6 Pro. By the way, the Huawei P50 Pro is the most expensive of all the phones mentioned.
Cameras
If you, like us, are annoyed by the ads in the system, come with us to fix your taste a bit. The pride of the phone is clearly the cameras. Huawei P50 Pro now dominates in the DxOMark rankings, where he earned a score of 144 points. It should be noted that the cameras are really famous.
There is a main 50Mpx sensor with f / 1.8 aperture, laser autofocus, PDAF and optical stabilization, 64Mpx telephoto lens with f / 3.5 aperture, PDAF, optical stabilization and 3.5x optical zoom, 13Mpx ultra-wide sensor with f / 2 aperture , 2 and the four ends with a 40Mpx black and white sensor with an aperture of f / 1.6.
Of course, the main sensor will please with its low noise level and wide dynamic range, which we would not be afraid to call the best when it comes to mobile phones. You will record many details for individual photos, even those that are in the distance. You will also enjoy the great white balance, and for the video that the Huawei P50 Pro manages to shoot in 4K resolution at 60 fps, you can count on quality stabilization.
The ultra-wide camera is also above average, which rarely distorts photos and delivers good performance even in low light conditions. The telephoto lens is traditionally excellent and offers up to 100x digital zoom. Already with the P40 Pro, the approach was literally magic, and this year the Chinese giant set the bar even higher. Cameras are (not only) excellent in our opinion. If you are looking for a mobile phone purely for photography, you can’t do better.
Pricing and Availability Huawei P50 Pro
The Huawei P50 Pro will go on sale in the Czech Republic on January 26 at a price of CZK 29,990.
Resumé
We come to the end of today’s review. We may repeat it, but the Huawei P50 Pro is undoubtedly a great piece of hardware in terms of hardware. It has a great display, uncompromising performance, good battery life and the best cameras ever. However, the question is whether you want to use it at all. If you don’t mind the absence of Google services (which is associated with a lot of annoyance) and the higher price, it will definitely not disappoint you. On the other hand, despite all the arguments, we can’t understand some of the shortcomings, such as the lack of 5G support or ads in the AppGallery. We ourselves are very curious whether this piece will find its customers in the Czech Republic.
