iPadOS 16: is now available
The big iPad update of the year is finally here. After iOS 16 was last month’s turn, Apple’s tablets can finally be updated. As you may know, iOS is also getting an update to iOS 16.1. But don’t worry, your iPad won’t suddenly be one version behind. Secretly, the iPad update is version 16.1, but Apple skipped iPadOS 16.0 and went straight to iPadOS 16.1.
Download and install iPadOS 16
It is very easy to download and install the new iPad update. Follow the steps below
- Make sure your iPad battery is at least 50 percent charged, or hang it on the charger;
- Go to the Settings app and tap “General”;
- Choose ‘Software Update’ and follow the steps on the screen.
It is also possible that the updates are not immediately visible or download very slowly. When Apple releases a major software update, many users try to download the new version at the same time. Often not everyone gets the update at the same time and sometimes it takes a while.
Don’t see the update right away? Then wait a while and try again in half an hour. Sometimes it also helps to restart your iPad. Also check to be sure whether your iPad will receive the update (read more quickly) otherwise it is not possible to download iPadOS 16.
The 3 most important new features in iPadOS 16
The iPadOS 16 update, of course, has some cool new features for the iPad. These are the most important in a row.
1. Stage Manager
Perhaps the most important new feature of iPadOS 16 is Stage Manager. This allows you to have multiple apps in view at the same time, each in their own windows. Handy if you often work with many apps at the same time and have to switch regularly.
Originally, the feature was only available for iPads with an M1 or M2 chip. They can run up to eight apps simultaneously. Apple has added support for Stage Manager to even more iPads during the beta.
These are the first-generation 11-inch iPad Pro (2018), second-generation 11-inch iPad Pro (2020), third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2018), and fourth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2020) . These four models do have minor limitations with Stage Manager: they support up to four apps simultaneously.
2. Weather app
Now you may think that the iPad already has a Weather app, but nothing could be further from the truth. On the iPad, in iPadOS 15 and earlier, you only have a Weather widget. When you sound that, a website will open where you can see the weather forecast.
In iPadOS 16, that will change and the iPad will also get a real, full-fledged Weather app after downloading the update. The app is made for the larger screen of the iPad and is also a lot faster than opening a website.
3. Various iOS 16 Features: Detach Photos
In iPadOS 16, many features of iOS 16 are also coming to the tablet (but not all). One of the more fun features coming to the iPad is turning your photo into a sticker. The Photos app automatically recognizes the subject in the photo and then creates a free-standing image of it. You use the function in the following way.
- Open one of your photos in the Photos app;
- Put your finger on the subject for about a moment and let go;
- Tap Copy or Share to share the sticker (if you don’t get this option, try another photo).
These iPads can switch to iPadOS
Unfortunately, iPadOS 16 is not available on all iPads. The following models can download and install iPadOS 16:
