Here are the best alternatives to Apple’s Weather app

Apple’s Weather app has been struggling all week with problems and is often unavailable. That is why we went looking for the best alternatives.

Apple Weather App: Alternatives

Basically, Apple’s Weather app has everything you’d expect from a good weather app. It looks slick, the forecasts are reasonably accurate, you have functions for a rain radar and air quality and you can even receive notifications for severe weather. Only, if all Apple’s Weather app is constantly out of the air, it is of little use to you.

Now we join iPhoned I assume Apple is busy fixing these issues, but it can’t hurt to have an alternative weather app on your phone anyway. Here are our favorites that rival Apple in terms of feature size.

1. Buienradar: the best app in the Netherlands

In our opinion, the best Weather app of Dutch origin is Buienradar. Initially, the app is useful to keep an eye on the weather at the moment. A map of the Netherlands appears on the screen, over which (in case of rain) showers slide like blue spots. Because Buienradar can also show satellite photos, it is also easy to check how cloudy or sunny it is at the current location or destination. There is also a pollen radar with a separate map especially for the hay fever season.

In addition, you can of course also view weather forecasts for the whole of the Netherlands. These were as accurate as Apple’s Weather app in our test. With Buienradar Plus (€ 3.49 per year) you can use the app without ads.

2. Il Meteo: the most complete app

An Italian weather app as the best alternative to Apple’s? Does that work a bit in the Netherlands? Yes, and much better than you think. This is mainly due to the data used by Il Meteo. These come on the one hand from one of the most advanced weather forecasting systems worldwide (Zeus 2016 HD) and on the other hand from the European Copernicus Institute. The combination of these makes for the best predictions we know of. Il Meteo has so much confidence in it that you can compare the forecasts with those of other well-known institutes.

You can also view real-time satellite images and there is a shower, cloud and wind radar (past and future). And if you long for a bit of Italian sun during this autumnal spring, you can even view webcams in almost all places in Italy.

There is a free version of Il Meteo with ads, and a paid ‘Plus’ version (ad-free) for €31.99. For the rest there are few differences.

3. Carrot Weather: For a little humor

Joking about the weather? That is necessary in the Netherlands. And for anyone who could use some humor in their weather app, Carrot Weather was invented. The app is filled to the brim with cynical statements and silly humor. This is not only reflected in the app itself, but also in the handy widget. Fortunately, not only the jokes are great, but also the data.

This makes Carrot Weather by far the nicest weather app with a nice design. The Apple Watch app also has a handy complication so you can give it a permanent spot on your watch face.

And if you don’t like all those silly jokes in hindsight, then you also make Carrot Weather completely serious (and boring). You need a subscription for the app – that will cost you € 21.99 per year

4. WeatherPro: For the weather geek

This app looks like it was designed for iOS 7. And that’s right, because the last major redesign dates from that time. But hey, it’s all about the information, right? And that’s where WeatherPro excels. The forecasts are accurate and you get a lot of additional information that will make the heart of every weather nerd beat faster. Radar images (from the past) are also possible.

The app costs 99 cents, but there is also an in-app subscription of € 10.99. That unlocks a treasure chest of even more data, including hourly forecasts for the next 14 days and radar forecasts.
