There is no longer room for Henry Cavill: Surprisingly, the British actor will not return to the role of Superman after all. He’s just too old for the next part, at least that’s what director James Gunn thinks indirectly. It wasn’t until October that Cavill announced that he was becoming Superman again.

No more Superman: Henry Cavill is out now after all

Henry Cavill must have imagined things differently. After stepping down from his starring role on the Netflix series The Witcher in October, he actually wanted to go back into the Superman costume. But nothing will come of it now. Cavill won’t be in the next Superman movie, as director James Gunn explains. He is currently writing a new screenplay and is also being considered as the director of the next Superman film.

According to Gunn, the film will be a look into the past. For a young DC hero is Cavill, at 39, is probably just too old. Gunn unequivocally writes that “the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.” There is therefore no scope for possible negotiations.

Cavill himself has also spoken out publicly. At Instagram he writes that he respects the decision, even if it saddens him. He speaks of a “changing of the guard” and good luck to everyone involved. Superman is “still here” even without him.

Expect to see these movies from the DC Universe:

After Cavill: Who will be the next Superman?

Since Cavill will no longer bring justice to the big screen as Superman, another actor will have to do it. It is not yet clear who that will be. According to Gunn, there already is a list of possible candidatesabout which he “couldn’t be happier”.

Cavill first portrayed the DC hero in 2013’s Man of Steel. The Briton helped America’s greatest superhero to achieve their first serious film success in recent times. He also starred in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and Justice League a year later.
