Heat pump or gas heating? There is a clear cost winner
The comparison portal Verivox carried out a study to determine whether it makes sense to replace an old gas heating system with a modern heat pump. The analysis has revealed a clear winner in terms of heating costs.
Analysis: Heat pump cheaper to operate than natural gas
A current analysis of the comparison portal Verivox shows that a modern heat pump is worthwhile in terms of heating costs compared to natural gas heating. A new customer currently pays around 2,100 euros for natural gas for a single-family house with an annual consumption of 20,000 kWh. In comparison, an efficient heat pump with an annual consumption of 20,000 kWh of heat requires a total of only 5,000 kWh heat pump electricity. The average cost for new customers is 1,451 euros.
The annual costs for the heat pump are made up of an average basic price of 114 euros and a working price of around 26.78 cents per kWh. These prices are below the planned price cap for heating electricity of 28 cents per kilowatt hour. Compared to gas, the total cost of the heat pump is for new customers about 31 percent lower (Source: Verivox).
However, it should be noted that under certain circumstances, heat pump cannot exploit its full potential. For example, if the insulation is insufficient or the radiators are not optimally suited. In such cases, the heating costs roughly correspond to those of gas heating. Around 7,500 kWh of electricity are required, which incurs costs of around 2,120 euros.
In addition, the installation of a heat pump is not exactly cheap, which is why you should not only pay attention to the running costs. Acquisition costs between 10,000 and 15,000 euros or more are not uncommon. The cost advantage over time is all the more important.

Verivox: An energy consultation is worthwhile
The energy expert Thorsten Storck from Verivox points out that the individual situation and structural conditions play an important role. In order to find out which type of heat pump is suitable and how efficient the future heating system can be, an on-site energy consultation is recommended.
