HBO Max launches AR app for new Game of Thrones series

HBO Max is bringing Game of Thrones back to the big screen on August 21 with the ‘House of the Dragon’ series. With the arrival of that series, it also launches the ‘DracARys’ game that allows you to raise your own dragon in an augmented reality (AR) experience. You will also learn to speak Valyrian.

In Game of Thrones’ House of the Dragon series, we’re going to see dragons again, see plenty of dragons flying and breathing fire. Everything they feel like. Only the streaming service will also release its own app that will allow fans to experience dragons even closer, but without the ravages and dangers that normally accompany them. That says HBO Max in a press release.

In the DracARys game you can ‘hatch’ a dragon egg and then you are responsible for the education of the creature. You get to see it in front of your eyes via AR and your phone’s camera. According to HBO Max, each dragon in the app is unique and you can train your dragon by speaking Valyrian words. The game reportedly uses “a personalized speech recognition system”.

After your dragon is fully grown, it will spread its wings to explore the world. You may also encounter other dragons in your path. The game uses the Unity engine and “the technology of Niantic’s Lightship”, according to HBO Max.

“With ‘House of the Dragon: DracARys’, we’ve brought the most personalized, interactive virtual creature to your phone to life with the latest augmented reality technology,” said Victor Pineiro, director of digital innovation at HBO Max. “We can’t wait for fans to delve even deeper into the world of Westeros through DracARys.”
