‘Halfway through the schoolyard, the treats clattered to the ground’

If mother and child went out of their way for a nice treat, there is an accident in a small corner.

Linda (40), mother of the twins Roos and Anne (8).

“Roos is a real chunky pilot, always has been. When I pieced together a treat with rather fragile ice cream cones containing a few bacon bits as ice cream scoops, I should have known this was going to be a challenge for Roos. I made a construction with cardboard so that the ice cream cones each stood in their own stand, hoping that Roos could hold the tray straight.

In the schoolyard

On the day of the birthday I took the girls to school by car. I made Anne wear one tray with horns and took the other myself. But halfway through the schoolyard, the lace on Anne’s brand new shoe loosened and she refused to walk further, fearing she might fall. So I gave Rose my tray, just to hold for a moment so I could tie Anne’s shoelace.

“Before I even touched the shoelace, I heard something slide followed by a rather timid ‘oh-oh’”

I shouldn’t have done that… Before I even touched the lace, I heard something slide behind me followed by a rather cramped ‘oh-oh’. Sure enough, there all the ice cream cones clattered to the ground. There was no saving it, all I could do was race to the supermarket, make new bacon and ice cream cones and put them together on the spot while Roos handed them out one by one.”
