Half of readers don’t want private information to be sold on

Free apps? Well, for nothing the sun rises, and that’s where it stops. Of course there are apps that you can download for free, but you always have to give up something for them. Not your money, but your personal information and other data. In our poll we asked what you think about this: is it okay that apps are not free but do sell your data on?

Data to third parties

The reason apps pass your data on to third parties has only one purpose: to make money. Still, only 1 percent of visitors were okay with developers of free apps selling the data on. Can’t earn that money any other way? 14 percent of readers are fine with free apps selling data to third parties, but only if that data sharing is transparent and with permission.

Even more people (37 percent) prefer their data to be anonymized, so that it cannot be concluded from the data that it is about them. But the majority of readers don’t want it at all: 47 percent say they don’t want their private information sold on in any way. Finally, there is still 1 percent who do not know.

facebook

You don’t lie in the comments: aeijsink says: “If you use Facebook, you have of course chosen the top answer. If not, I would take a closer look at the revenue model of this service.” Katty is especially concerned about the indirect victims of these practices. Katty: “In my opinion, data can be collected anonymously, but contacts and photos cannot. I mean: I have information in my contacts from friends, who have not given permission for it to be shared with an app. What I do with my data is my responsibility.”

Edo doesn’t quite trust the poll. Or at least, he thinks that maybe people aren’t quite that honest after all. Edo de Roo: “It’s just like the elections to the House of Representatives. People think this, but vote that.” he replies to ohohrobino. He said: “So after 81 votes, 46% of the people still live with the idea that everything on the internet is or should be free…. #goodnight”

AW Poll

In short, it’s quite a heated topic: on the one hand, we say we’re not okay with our data being resold, but on the other hand, few people read the full terms before tapping ‘yes’ or ‘ok’. There is only one condition for the next poll: that you simply participate again. Until then!
