Do you also have an iPhone 8 or older?

Half of the iPhone users in the Netherlands have a device that is at least four years old. This is according to a study by Telecom paper† This means that most people don’t feel the need to upgrade to the latest model every two years. In fact, more and more people are opting for a second-hand or refurbished model that is newer than their current smartphone, but older than the most recent Apple device.

About 8 percent of Dutch iPhone users walk around with an iPhone 8 from 2017. With a share of no less than 16 percent, the iPhone 11 from 2019 fills most Dutch pockets. Apple’s latest smartphones have a relatively small market share: only 8 percent of users have an iPhone 12(Pro). The iPhone 13(Pro) does not do much better, because there too we see that 8 percent of Dutch iPhone users have this device. This means that no less than 84 percent of iPhone users in the Netherlands walk around with a smartphone that is at least 2.5 years old.

iPhone 11

It is striking that Dutch young people (aged 18 to 24) are generally quicker to purchase a new telephone. Incidentally, they often ignore Apple’s Pro devices – possibly because they find them too expensive. The regular iPhone 11 is currently the most popular Apple smartphone among Dutch young people. No less than 20 percent of them walk around with this device.

Good software support pays off

Apple provides its smartphones with the latest software updates for a very long time. For example, the 7.5-year-old iPhone 6S still runs on iOS 15, the most recent version of Apple’s mobile software. This means that the device can still be used safely in 2022 and is well resistant to hackers. In addition, users still have many of the latest software features that iOS 15 brings.

Only 6 percent of Dutch users have an iPhone that is no longer supported by Apple. In Android land, there is much more segmentation, because Android devices only get software updates for two to four years. As a result, many of these people use outdated Android versions, making them vulnerable to cyber-attacks.
