Hacker steals hundreds of millions of Ethereum, but soon regrets it

Poly Network suddenly lost $600 million in Ethereum this week, but the hacker responsible seems to want to make amends.

A hacker made about $600 million in stolen cryptocurrency this week. He managed to penetrate the Poly Network and mainly looted Ethereum, BinanceChain and Ethereum-linked Polygon. Shortly after the theft, the network put a open letter on Twitter. In it, the blockchain network made a request. The hacker turned out to be sensitive to this, because he deposited the money back en masse. Or does he feel pressure from another, slightly less forgiving party?

Hacker steals Ethereum

The story started earlier this week; an anonymous hacker managed to loot more than 600 million dollars (converted more than €510 million) through a vulnerability in the Poly Network. According to the network, he hit the wallets of tens of thousands of crypto owners. Poly wrote to the hacker:

The loot is one of the largest in crypto history. Authorities will see this as a massive economic crime and track you down. The money you stole belongs to tens of thousands of members of the crypto community. Contact us to find a solution.

You wouldn’t expect a malicious hacker to respond to this. The opposite seemed true, because according to TheBlock, he (or she) has refunded more than a third, about $256 million, into Poly Network’s accounts.

Incidentally, there is something more, because hackers from SlowMist claimed to have already tracked down the Ethereum hacker shortly after the attack. Perhaps he felt the hot breath of the crypto security guards on his neck and wanted to give some money back as a make-up. For the time being, it remains at the above amount. It remains to be seen whether the rest will also return to Poly Netwerk customers and whether the perpetrator will eventually be caught.
