Gorilla Glass DX: the technology that will improve your photos
You hold your smartphone in your hands over a bed of slightly sharp stones. You take pictures of your friends. Someone ends up saying “Cheese”, it’s too much happiness, but yet, an event spoils this moment that will mark history: you drop your phone on the ground, on the side of the screen in addition ! Like the legend of the buttered toast which always falls on the side of butter, a smartphone still has the annoying tendency to always fall on the side of the screen. Still, you keep calm, pick up your phone, and take the shot with serenity. But how is this possible?
Quite simply because your smartphone is equipped with glass Gorilla Glass, reputed to be the most resistant. While the 6th generation of this product is on the market, the novelty this year is the technology Gorilla Glass with DX / DX +. If the screen, the glass back and the photo island of our dear devices were protected, the pictures suffered from this coating. But before talking about “DX”, let’s go back to the origins …
Gorilla Glass, what is it?
the Gorilla Glass is a brand of glass with incredible strength. This material is chemically reinforced to make an alkali-aluminosilicate glass. For the more scientific among you, the process consists of replace the sodium ions contained in the glass with potassium ions. This causes greater compression on the surface and therefore makes the glass more difficult to break.
It allows for example to withstand around fifteen drops from one meter directly on the screen. It also allowsprevent scratches. This glass is therefore the best friend of smartphones and is now fitted to more than 900 devices, including most of the high-end models. Moreover, it does not only concern the screens since the glass backs are also concerned, as is the window which covers the photo sensors. This technology is developed by Corning, the American company specializing in the manufacture of glass and ceramics. The company has also played a big role in the development of fiber optics.
More solid and invisible
Until then, their Gorilla Glass reflected too much light, making capture by smartphone camera lenses difficult. It therefore greatly reduced the quality of the images captured by the cameras. It is indeed difficult to find a compromise between solidity and quality of capture.
Yet it would seem that Corning has finally found the solution to the problem with his Gorilla Glass with DX. This glass has been around since 2016 but has so far only been used on connected watches and bracelets.
Today the Americans are announcing that they have succeeded in concocting a glass that lets through 98% of the light. Until then, normal glasses were satisfied with a rate between 92 and 95%.
The alternative was the sapphire crystal. But this one has a high cost that the baby does not have Corning. It can therefore offer good protection of the lens without reducing the quality of the photos and increasing the price of the device.
A video shared on the account Youtube of the company looks back on the evolution of the cameras of our smartphones and demonstrates the benefits of the product in pictures:
Corning has already announced that they have signed an agreement with Samsung to equip future devices with technology Gorilla Glass with DX. We will probably learn more about this deal during theUnpacked Event August 11. The rumor suggests that the models Galaxy z fold 3 and Galaxy z flip 3 could be part of the lot. This new technology will equip more and more devices in the near future. We can’t wait to try this …
