Google wants you to never be annoyed when you get a call

Google plans to add more capabilities to the Pixel call screen to make it easier for users to review and answer calls. Google talked about Pixel’s calling screen on the new edition of the Made by Google podcast.

No unpleasant calls

Product manager Jonathan Eccles says he would like the company to address unwanted call issues. Eccles says: “The goal is a future where you never, ever have to be annoyed by the thought of your phone ringing. It should always be a moment that you assume is something important or something wonderful. Nothing should ever disturb you. And at the same time, you should never feel that you are ineffective or unproductive during a phone call.”

In a world where sometimes everything seems to go via WhatsApp, it is interesting that Google still wants to focus on this. On the other hand, anyone whose telephone number can be found online knows that the vague calls from the ‘ministry of justice’ to the ‘Microsoft support desk’ are getting out of hand. As soon as your phone rings and you take a look at your device, it is smart to be able to assess more quickly what you want to do with a call.

Artificial intelligence

Google wants to do that by using artificial intelligence. That could open many doors to adding a layer of protection to a call, according to Google. It also seems to have a very well-defined plan for this, although it does not want to say much about it yet. Would it use the same system behind Bard for that call screen? Can you, for example, have Bard answer a call when you give it this command?

Who knows, we might learn more about it during Google I/O, the presentation that the company has planned for May 10th. This meeting has to be about artificial intelligence, although there are also several devices that are likely to get attention at this event, including Pixel 7a, Pixel tablet and perhaps that eagerly awaited Pixel Fold.
