Google Image Search: New SafeSearch settings are designed to protect against explicit content
Google has worked in the past to tailor its search results to the developmental stages and needs of children and young people. SafeSearch is the name of one of the tools that emerged from it.
In the coming months, the company intends to further expand the protection mechanism. In the future, it should protect Google users from accidentally encountering pornographic or violent content when searching for images.
Google Image Search: SafeSearch setting pixelates explicit content
The tool’s new extension will automatically blur explicit images when they appear in search results. This means that, for example, pornographic content or depictions of violence and horror are automatically blurred.
SafeSearch filtering is already enabled by default for users under the age of 18. What is new is that all other users are also automatically protected from supposedly disturbing content – even if they have not activated SafeSearch filtering.
Corresponding images are only visible when those affected function deliberately deactivate or unlock individual images with a click of a button.
Even more tools for using the Internet safely
In addition to SafeSearch, Google also provides other tools that allow families to manage their relationship with technology, the company said. This includes features such as Family Link, which parents can use to monitor their children’s online activities and set screen time limits. It also allows legal guardians to apply content restrictions.
In addition, a new YouTube playlist for children is starting immediately. In “Build a Safer Internet”, kids and young people will find content that is intended to raise awareness of safe, responsible and positive interaction with the digital world and to help them find their way in it.
Incidentally, Google emphasizes that the SafeSearch tool only works for its own search results. The protective function cannot be extended to the content of other services.
