Google presents Pixel Fold, Pixel 7a and Pixel Tablet

Google presented numerous new products at its annual developer conference, the Google IO. Among them is a foldable smartphone for the first time: the Google Pixel Fold. Also: New software and the Google Pixel Tablet.

Google Pixel Fold: Google’s first foldable smartphone

With the Google Pixel Fold, Google has already confirmed one of the most persistent rumors in advance and announced a launch at its developer conference.

Unlike the Z Fold4 from Samsung, the device is significantly wider and heavier. A 5.8-inch small Full-HD-Plus (2092 × 1080 px) AMOLED display in a 17.4:9 aspect ratio with a refresh rate of 120 Hertz should ensure a familiar smartphone experience. In the front display there is a 9.5 megapixel front camera for selfies or video calling.

If you open the device, you will find a 7.6 inch Full HD Plus OLED display, which can also display up to 120 Hertz in a 6:5 aspect ratio. Clear display edges can be seen above and below the inner display. There is also an 8 megapixel camera.

Google Pixel Fold: The Details

Inside sits Google’s current processor, the Tensor G2, which is protected by the Titan M2 chip. The device is only available with twelve gigabytes of LPDDR5 RAM and either 256 or 512 gigabytes of internal UFS 3.1 storage.

On the back of the Google Pixel Fold are three camera sensors, a 48 megapixel wide-angle lens, a 10.8 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera (121.1°) and a 10.8 megapixel telephoto camera (5x optical zoom, 20x digital).

The software running on the device is Android 13. Google promises to have adapted it to the new form factor. There is a multitasking mode, a newly designed notification list or customized apps.

The device is IPX8 water-resistant and, according to Google, the “most durable foldable smartphone on the market”. However, it is very heavy at 283 grams, even for a foldable device.

The Google Pixel Fold can be pre-ordered now from the Google Store and later this month from participating retailers for €1,899 and is scheduled to ship on June 27, 2023. Pre-orderers get a Google Pixel Watch.

Pixel 7a: mid-range refresh

With the Google Pixel 7a, Google is relaunching the middle class – as the successor to the Pixel 6a we tested. A glass back is also new, but the design remains the same. The device keeps its 6.1-inch small Full HD Plus display, but gets a 90 Hertz refresh rate.

The Pixel Tensor G2 is now also inside, with eight gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of internal memory. The 4385 mAh battery can be charged with a maximum of 18 watts by cable or five watts wirelessly – also a new feature compared to its predecessor.

The 10.95-inch device has an LCD display with a resolution of 2560 × 1600 and a maximum brightness of 500 candelas. It supports stylus pens according to USI 2.0, but Google itself does not supply one.

For example, he has adapted more than 50 of his own apps to the form factor of the US group. Multiple user profiles can also be created if multiple family members use the device.
