Google Play Store integrates ads into search results
Search suggestions on Google can be very funny. For example, search for ‘is it crazy about’ and Google will come up with additions, such as ‘it’s too crazy to sail’ or ‘so hot it is to drive you crazy’. Nice to see that way what other people are looking for a lot. However, that system will change within the Google Play store. If you want to search for an app, you will now not only get search suggestions, but also advertisements. They are even above the suggestions.

Google’s new way of making search suggestions is not yet live everywhere, so there is hope that we will not have to deal with this for a while, but there are several people who report that they have encountered this, according to tech expert Mishaal Rahman on Twitter. We already wrote about this feature in November, because then people already saw promotion for apps. Something that Google said wasn’t ads, just proactive recommendations for apps that might suit you. That sounded nice, but it now appears that it is also used for advertisements.

People in Japan and the United Kingdom are already seeing the ads, which implies that it will soon be coming to more countries. You can recognize them by the word ‘ad’ next to the suggestion. It may be that only people who have the suggestions option enabled on their account will get the ads, but that is not certain.

There are also positive changes to searching within the Play Store, because you can see more information with the apps, such as the user rating (the number of stars) and the number of downloads. Very nice, because that way you will sooner find the app you are looking for and which is also reliable. That’s a positive side effect of Google’s rumblings with its recommendations, but otherwise it’s a bit disappointing to see ads being shown even in such a place.
It is said that it may have to do with the fact that Google in certain countries must allow payments to go through third parties, something that means it is missing out on a lot of revenue.
