Google Pixel 7 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: like two drops of water?

Google has unveiled the new Pixel 7 Pro: the first Pixel phone that will also be sold in the Netherlands. How does it compare to the iPhone 14 Pro Max? We list all the differences and similarities in our comparison.

Read on after the ad.

Google Pixel 7 Pro vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max

The Pixel 7 Pro is Google’s latest top-of-the-line smartphone. Although the Pixel has never been for sale in the Netherlands – and you always had to purchase the Pixel abroad with a detour – that will change this year.

But with such a large new player on the Dutch market, the most important question is what exactly does he add compared to the competition. And what competition is more important than the iPhone? That’s why we put Apple’s current top device, the iPhone 14 Pro Max, next to the Pixel 7 Pro. We will go through the most important specifications for you.

1. Display

Both the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 7 Pro have a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display. As a result, they both have excellent contrast and vibrant colors, and support for always-on. Both devices also have a smooth refresh rate of up to 120 hertz.

The iPhone is still a bit ahead in terms of brightness. It reaches up to 2000 nits, while the Pixel 7 Pro remains at 1500 nits. However, you generally won’t notice that much. Also not really noticeable is the better sharpness of the Pixel 7 Pro: it has a resolution of 512 pixels per inch, and the iPhone has 460. You’ll really have to squint to see the difference.

2. Cameras

The iPhone 14 Pro Max has three cameras: a wide-angle camera, ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto lens. A new feature of the wide-angle camera is that it now has a super-sharp 48-megapixel sensor, which bundles pixels per four (pixel binning) and thus makes a very bright 12-megapixel photo. The other two cameras stick to a normal 12-megapixel sensor, as does the selfie camera. The latter now has autofocus for the first time.

The Google Pixel 7 Pro also has three cameras: a wide-angle camera, ultra-wide-angle camera, and a telephoto lens. And if that sounds familiar to you: the wide-angle camera has a 50-megapixel sensor that bundles pixels per four and … you understand the rest. What is special about the Pixel is that it also uses pixel binning for the telephoto lens, because it has a sharper 48-megapixel sensor. The selfie camera has ‘just’ fixed focus.

If we take a look at the possibilities for filming, there are even more similarities to be found. Both devices support 4K filming with 10-bit HDR, both devices have a film mode for a cinematic background blur, and both devices film in slow motion at up to 240 frames per second. You also get a special mode with both smartphones for super stable filming with a lot of movement.

3. Chip and working memory

The iPhone 14 Pro Max has a brand new Apple-designed A16 Bionic chip, which has subtle speed improvements over the previous A15 Bionic. The main improvements are in the ISP – the Image Signal Processor – which can process photos with the new Photonic Engine even better than before.

The Pixel 7 Pro also has a chip designed by the manufacturer itself: the Tensor G2. This second-generation chip is slightly faster than its predecessor, and is especially improved in terms of… the ISP. Surprise, surprise. The Pixel 7 Pro does have twice as much RAM as the iPhone 14 Pro Max: 12 GB vs. 6GB. This is particularly beneficial for multitasking.

4. Versions and Prices

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the most expensive iPhone ever. It is available with 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB storage, with a starting price of €1479. It comes in four colors: space black, silver, gold and deep purple.

The Pixel 7 Pro also happens to be the most expensive Pixel ever. It is available with 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB storage, with a starting price of € 899. So a good deal compared to the iPhone – if you ignore that it runs on Android. It comes in three colors: obsidian, snow and gray-green.

You get until October 30 100 euros discount when purchasing the Google Pixel 7 Pro. With entry prices of 649 euros and 899 euros respectively, you pick up the devices there from 574 euros and 799 euros.

Do you prefer nice earplugs? At T-Mobile and Tele2, you can request brand new Google Pixel Buds Pro as a pre-order gift. The Buds Pro normally cost 219 euros separately.
