Google lets you generate images with AI within Slides in Labs
Google is expanding Workspace with more AI capabilities. For example, you can count on image generation with AI in Slides, so you can create beautiful backgrounds that are completely to your taste. The new features are now coming first to testers within the Workspace Labs program.
AI in Google Workspace
To enter what you want to see within Slides there is a ‘help me visualize’ side panel to enter your query. You can also choose certain styles to give a little more direction, such as photography, illustrations, backgrounds, clip art. This all works thanks to Imagen and other models that can generate images.
It’s a welcome addition to Slides, but it’s not the only AI Google announced at I/O 2023 and is rolling out now. For example, ‘Help me write’ (help me write) will be expanded with answers that take into account what happened earlier in an email conversation and Google will occasionally mention someone’s name, for example.

In Docs, Google adds new variables to help you remember to do certain things, such as the name of your company if you’re talking about a job. That works a bit like in Gmail when you mention an attachment but there is no attachment with the mail: are you sure you haven’t forgotten it? It works the same way in Google Docs: the tool gives you a little nod to check if you haven’t forgotten anything (and ultimately also to sell yourself better).
These are all small adjustments that Google makes to make everything a little more ‘AI’.
If you also want a taste of it for the crowd, you can register for the Google Labs on this page. There are a lot of waiting lists, so you probably won’t have access right away.
