Google AR glasses on the street

The original Google Glass was never widely available to consumers and the product eventually went extinct, but Google may have other plans for its successor. During Google I/O 2022, we were shown a first prototype of Google’s new AR glasses. The company now wants to go a step further and also test the glasses in public, it announced in a blog post.

Google employees and trusted testers are taking the glasses to the streets. It looks like a normal spectacle frame, only a screen is built into the lenses. According to Google, the glasses also have sensors that register images and sound, without the company speaking much in detail. For now, the glasses are only being tested in the United States and employees use them for navigation, translation and transcription, among other things. We could already see the latter at work in the video below during Google I/O 2022.

With these new AR glasses, Google seems to be writing a new page after the closed chapter that is Google Glass. It also recently acquired a company specializing in the production of microLED screens, which are compact panels that can be used in smart glasses. However, Google’s plans with the new glasses are not yet completely clear.

Google promises that testers take the privacy of passers-by into account. They may address the testers and ask them to remove footage. The glasses are used for photography purposes, but they do process footage. Finally, there is also a clearly defined area where testers are allowed to wear the glasses.
