Google comes with a solution for crashing apps

There’s not much you can do about an app that crashes on your Android phone except send feedback to the developer. Fortunately, Google has announced a new feature that can come in handy.

Automatic update prompts?

Google announces automatic update prompts for crashing apps. What does such a prompt mean?

The prompt (or notification) appears if an app crashes in the foreground and an update for that same app is available in the Play Store. So, with the prompt, you can quickly update the app and use it again without any problems.

Google indicates that developers don’t have to do anything to enable this feature. Instead, the prompts are automatically enabled for apps in the Play Store. Once a newer version of a crashing app is available that has a “statistically lower crash rate”, that version will be recommended to the user. In addition, the notification is displayed by the Play Store and not by the app in question. Thus, the update prompt can always be displayed even if the app crashes on launch.

Also works on older phones

Google says the feature works on phones and tablets running Android 7.0 or later. That means even your old 2017 phone should support the feature.

While the prompt obviously doesn’t make much sense if a newly updated app crashes, it’s still a useful feature nonetheless. Especially if you don’t update your apps automatically.
