Google Chrome gets this small but useful feature

Google wants to offer a Picture-in-Picture mode in Chrome. You can then use other tabs while minimizing video content or a video meeting. The Chrome developers are still working on the feature.

Picture in Picture for Chrome

If you have a PC at home with a large ultrawide monitor, you can easily open two full browser tabs side by side to multitask. That’s a different story on a smaller laptop or smartphone screen. A feature like Chrome’s new Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode is very welcome.

It will soon be possible to minimize the content of a tab in a much smaller window. This content therefore remains active, but you can work on another tab at the same time. Google wants to be the first to use this for all types of video content. You can then place Netflix, YouTube or a Twitch live stream in a small window on top of your other browser tab. It is therefore possible to continue to follow the stream. In the small window there are also buttons to pause media, there is a time bar and a button to switch back to a larger view.

More applications

Google plans to use the PiP feature for other purposes as well. For example, you will also be able to minimize a video meeting in a small PiP window. In addition, it can also work for a music player, a document from Google Docs, your notes from Google Keep or a pomodoro timer. The latter is a timer that reminds you to take short breaks from your work.

Website developers will soon be able to make their content compatible with the PiP function. At the moment there is already a Chrome flag dedicated to the function, which is an experimental setting that you can activate yourself. Only the flag doesn’t do anything at the moment. In Chrome version 115, Google wants to test it more widely, and that update should appear in September.
