Google Chrome gets more energy efficient: tabs in sleep mode

A new feature is being tested in a new version of Google Chrome. A new Memory Saver function should cause tabs to go into sleep mode.

Tabs in sleep mode

Chrome Canary, an early test version of Chrome, is testing a new feature for the browser app. The application can now have endless tabs open on your device, but silently tabs always consume memory and therefore battery. Google thought it was time to do something about it.

In the latest version of Chrome, the (working) memory is used more efficiently and therefore also with the battery of the smartphone or tablet. For Android, and for other platforms, a so-called Memory Saver is being tested. Puts tabs that have not been used for a long time to sleep. That way they don’t stay active anymore, but they don’t have to be closed. This function can be recognized by a special icon in the address bar.

It is not yet known when Google will roll out the functionality widely. It is currently still in the testing phase.
