Google brings YouTube Music apps to Apple TV, Garmin and more

Google is rumored to make YouTube Music available on more platforms and expand third-party integrations. Among other things, there would be a YouTube Music app for Apple TV and for Garmin watches.

YouTube Music is one of the most popular music streaming apps worldwide. Google’s music service is widely available on various platforms. In addition to apps for Android, iOS and iPad, the company also offers a music experience within the main YouTube app for TVs. You won’t get the same set of features or similar experiences everywhere, but the service is available on a wide range of devices.

But Google now wants to make YouTube Music even more accessible, sources familiar with the situation report to 9to5Google. According to this information, Google plans to develop a standalone app for Apple TV. The music service will have a separate icon on your TV’s home screen, and you’ll no longer have to go through the YouTube app. There may also be a dedicated app for Google TV/Android TV, although sources aren’t sure.

Google is also said to be working on expanding YouTube Music’s integration with HomePod, similar to how Pandora does it. As the report notes, “those third parties can be set as the default for voice commands”. In line with that, Apple announced Siri support for AirPlay on HomePod at its annual developer conference WWDC. The company named YouTube Music as a partner, so integration is very likely.

Google is also said to be planning to develop new YouTube Music apps for wearables. Garmin smartwatches seem to be at the front of the line. Garmin’s Connect IQ Store already includes some popular music streaming apps, including Spotify, Deezer and Amazon Music. Google is now missing out on some potential users and subscriptions by not making YouTube Music available in the Connect IQ Store for Garmin devices.

Hopefully, Google will also update its legacy Apple Watch and Wear OS apps with new features, including offline storage for the Apple Watch. The WearOS version could get the ability to act as a remote control for YouTube Music on Android phones. Unfortunately, there is no official confirmation from Google on any of these rumors. The company says it “has nothing to share at this time.”
