Google and Spotify introduce 2 new Android features

Google announces that Spotify will soon work better with the media player in Android. If you play music or podcasts, you will be able to switch between speakers from the media player in the quick settings. In addition, the integration with Spotify goes one step further.

Spotify integration in Android

Whether Google likes it or not, Spotify is by far the most popular music app for Android users. So it makes sense that the Android developers are making efforts to improve the experience for users. In a blog post, Google discusses two new Spotify integrations in Android.

Since Android 13 you can easily select the playback device for your music via the media player of the quick settings. In the media player you can see on which device music is currently playing and you can then change the volume or choose a different playback device.

In combination with YouTube Music, you can choose a speaker, Chromecast or Bluetooth headphones as a playback device, but Spotify users could only switch between Bluetooth devices. That is now changing, because the media player will now work with all Spotify Connect devices. You will therefore also be able to switch between speakers and Chromecasts in the media player of the quick settings.

Music notifications

Google also announces a second novelty for Spotify users. In Android there will be a new notification that you can tap to immediately stream music to the speaker closest to you. Thanks to a new technique, your phone can determine the distance between speakers. These prompts to play music right away will only work for Spotify and YouTube Music users.
