Maaike (37): “Never before have I boarded a plane without a boyfriend, girlfriend or family, but last year I wanted to do a sculpting course; that chopping into such a stone has attracted me for years.

I decided to sign up for a course in the South of France. There were seven other students, all from Italy. They were somewhat older women who had weekly modeling lessons together. They were incredibly friendly, but their English was poor.

Own way

We were free from three o’clock and I went out alone those afternoons. Very nice to determine your own way. It felt adventurous. While walking through the hills there was such a beautiful sunset. It really gave an ‘on top of the world’ feeling, it made me emotional. That was a moment I wish I could have shared with my family.

It was the only moment that week that I really missed them, otherwise it was great. Even the evenings in my cozy hotel room, where I thought about my life a thousand-and-a-half miles away. I would like to do it again – and then I will go alone again.”
