God of War will be running on Amazon

The successful video game series God of War about Kratos – and now his son Atreus – becomes a series on Prime Video. Amazon has officially greenlit the game series. The plans are well received by many fans, but there is also a drop of bitterness.

God of War series confirmed: Prime Video secures huge deal

Amazon Prime Video brings the story of Kratos, the god of war, from the video game series God of War as a series adaptation. The streaming service has now made it official:

In addition to Amazon, Sony Pictures, PlayStation Productions and the game developers at SantaMonica Studios are said to be on board (source: The Hollywood Reporters). The series has been in the works since the plans became known in the spring. Rafe Judkins, who also wrote for the Uncharted film adaptation, will appear as showrunner. Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby – both Oscar nominees and co-workers on the first installment of Iron Man – are executive producing and writing the screenplay.

That Casting is not yet known. Fans have long since accepted this and bring John Travolta into play as Kratos:

At the latest since the Grease star banged the drum for the latest part of the game series, this desired cast is no longer an insider tip. However, it is unlikely that the now 68-year-old actor could still do justice to the extremely physical role.

But it is already clear that the series based on the 2018 God of War title will. They want to show the father-son story and their journey together through the icy, mythical north – and the fights against monsters of all kinds and one or the other god, according to Amazon.

Amazon series starts late in God of War lore

The plans reveal a drop of bitterness for fans from the very beginning: with the setting in the north and the focus on the story of Kratos and Atreus, all the predecessors who made God of War great are neglected.

The new part God of War Ragnarök takes place after the events of the series:

But postponed does not necessarily mean canceled. The God of War series offers with its predecessors for the 2018 reboot lots of stuff for prequels or spinoffs. This is currently pure speculation and will primarily be due to the success of the upcoming series. It doesn’t have a start date yet. It is likely that Kratos and Atreus will come to Prime Video in 2025 at the earliest.
