Gmail adds a blue certification badge to ensure the sender
We already know the blue certification badge on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and other platforms. Now Gmail is getting started. Google explain that this system should help users determine if the email they received is from a legitimate source and not from a scammer.
The certification blue badge is based on Gmail’s BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) feature. This requires companies to authenticate the logo of the brand they use as an avatar so that users know that this logo really belongs to them. Companies that have already adopted the BIMI feature will automatically receive the blue badge.
It is possible to hover over the badge, we can then read: “The sender of this email has verified ownership of google.com and the logo in the profile picture”. It says google.com here because it’s an email from Google. The address changes depending on the sender.
Strong email authentication helps users and security systems identify and stop spam, and also allows senders to leverage their brand trust. This builds trust in email sources and provides users with an overall experience that normally will be more secure.
Google announces that the blue certification badge on Gmail is being rolled out. Some have it today, others will have it over the weeks.
