Gigaset presents glass GS5 with Android 12 promise

The German Gigaset has released a new phone that will be updated to Android 12. It is the Gigaset GS5 with a glass housing. The smartphone was not presented on a grand scale, but appeared quite suddenly on the brand’s website, Android Planet writes.

Successor to the GS4

The successor to GS4 is especially different in its design. The housing is made entirely of tempered glass. An advantage is that the cameras are better fused with the housing, so that they do not protrude and your phone can therefore lie flat on the table. There are two cameras on the back: the main camera is 48 megapixels and the wide-angle lens is 8 megapixels. With that wide-angle lens, you can also take macro photos (especially from very close up) in addition to wide shots.

At the back is also the fingerprint scanner, but facial recognition is also an option to access your smartphone. You’re probably better off using the fingerprint scanner, because it can do much more than just unlock. For example, by tapping or swiping on the scanner, you can open the camera app or answer a phone call.

Low refresh rate

The screen is 6.3 inches with a full HD resolution (2340 x 1080 pixels). The refresh rate is only 60 Hertz, which is a disappointment for 2021. Most phone screens are now at least 90 Hertz in terms of refresh rate. This gives you a smoother experience when scrolling through social media or websites, but that is not in the new Gigaset.

Currently, Gigaset GS5 runs on Android 11, but it will be updated to Android 12 later. Gigaset promises three years of security updates, but how regularly these follow is unknown.

Gigaset GS5

Furthermore, the Gigaset GS5 is not very impressive in terms of specifications. The MediaTek Helio G85 chip does its job, but is not a high-flyer in the processor area. The budget device also offers 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage memory. With the 4,500 mAh battery you should be able to go a day ahead. The advantage of its glass housing is that you can also charge this device wirelessly.

Previous GS devices have also appeared in the Netherlands and that is no different for GS5. It costs 299 euros and comes in the colors light gray and dark gray. GS4 was 229 euros at the time of publication, so this device is considerably more expensive for this class of smartphones.
