Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 review – worth your money?
Ghost of Tsushima, released last year, has received a new expansion called the Director’s Cut. This also includes PS5 upgrade. Is it worth your money?
It wouldn’t have mattered much if we were talking about the game of the year 2020. At the time, that prize went to The Last of Us Part 2. A very cool game too, so I understand the result of that award. But the also nominated Ghost of Tsushima gasped in the neck of The Last of Us, because what a beautiful game this is.
We won’t go into detail about the game itself. Firstly, because the game was already released in 2020. Second, because you want to save us spoilers. This Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 review focuses on one thing. Is it worth your money to make this upgrade?

What’s different?
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut brings new content to the game in the form of an all-new island. You travel to Iki Island, where an all-new samurai adventure awaits you. This expansion is available immediately to gamers who have already completed the game on the PlayStation 4 and purchase the Director’s Cut. New players must first play part of the story to unlock the expansion.
What’s new?
It’s not just simply new content that Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut brings. It has become a full-fledged PS5 game. Both the main game and the expansion are optimized for the PlayStation 5. That means not only graphic improvements, but also support for the DualSense controller with haptic feedback. We list all the improvements for you below.
- Gaming in 4k resolution, including Performance mode to play at 60 fps
- Support for DualSense
- 3D audio on the PS5
- Improved lip sync when playing the game with Japanese audio
How does it play?
The reviews from 2020 do not lie. It was a lot of positive sounds. So you know as soon as you fire up Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on your PS5 that something great is waiting for you, as we found out while making the review. It’s like Assassin’s Creed, with Red Dead Redemption and Metal Gear Solid put in a blender. Three games I love, so you can imagine how Ghost of Tsushima plays for me. I once had to deal with a small bug, where the enemy had fallen through a platform and I couldn’t finish him because of that. But that was just one case in many hours of gameplay.
Impressive
The PlayStation 5 upgrade is simply breathtaking. The world that was already impressive on the PS4 is even more impressive on the PlayStation 5. I remember being impressed with Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla on the PS5. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut rumbles over that with graphical splendor. The world is alive and not dead. The wind, an important theme in the game, plays a constant role in this. And when the dynamic weather turns into thunderstorms, it even almost gives you shivers. Thunderclap, lightning, the sounds and the increasing wind. Plus a great soundtrack. Ghost of Tsushima knows how to take you to ancient Japan in a unique way.
It’s not that the Iki Island expansion is just an extra with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. You really should see this as an additional story to the adventures you have with Jin. As soon as you travel to Iki Island you will also see a warning. You start a new story and cannot immediately travel back. Only when you have made progress in the new story does the freedom come to travel back and forth between Tsushima and Iki Island.
Is it worth your money?
A question I didn’t have to think long about. A resounding yes! The new adventure brings you back to that great samurai gameplay we got to experience last year. It’s the best game Sucker Punch has developed to date, so the extra adventure in a PS5 guise is more than welcome.
Incidentally, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will also come to the PlayStation 4. However, you will not have all the improvements that come with the PlayStation 5 version. It goes without saying that you get the best experience on the PS5. The game is available in various forms. If you’ve already played the game on PS4, you can simply transfer the save data to the Director’s Cut.
- Ghost of Tsushima PS4 Upgrade to Director’s Cut PS4 – €19.99
- Ghost of Tsushima PS4 Upgrade to Director’s Cut PS5 – $29.99
- Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS4 – €59.99
- Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 – $69.99
If you have now bought the Director’s Cut on your PlayStation 4 and want to upgrade to the PS5 version in the future, it will cost you 10 euros.
Conclusion
To make the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 review, we delved into the practical side of the story. Should you or shouldn’t you buy the upgrade? As a new player we say yes! As a returning player, we also say yes! Simply because the Iki Island expansion continues at the same level as you are used to from the game. So if you have enjoyed all the experiences in Tsushima, then you will also have a great time on Iki Island. As this is an exclusive PlayStation game you can expect excellent quality. No crazy frame drops, no annoying (recurring) bugs. And that for an open world game with an insane amount of detail. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is currently the most graphically beautiful game on the PS5. Period.
Pros
- Graphics improvements are impressive
- DualSense support
- Large expansion, good for many hours of fun
Negatives
- Graphical improvements do not involve ray tracing
- Upgrading if you already had the base game isn’t cheap
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut will be available exclusively on PlayStation 4 and 5 on August 20
