German Twitter employees are taking legal action against dismissal

After the takeover by Elon Musk, the wave of layoffs also reached Twitter in Germany. But in this country, the employees now want to defend themselves legally against the layoffs.

It’s been less than a month since Elon Musk took over the short message service Twitter. In this short time, the Tesla boss has managed to throw the social network into chaos.

First, Musk turned the previous system upside down to include the verifications, triggering a wave of fake accounts. He then fired around half of the employees, only to ask some of them back shortly afterwards.

Twitter in Germany is also affected by the wave of layoffs after the Musk takeover. But the employees have now joined forces and want to take legal action against their dismissals, as if from a Communication from the Verdi trade union emerges.

How did the terminations on Twitter work in Germany?

So far, Twitter had around 30 employees in Germany. Verdi does not write in his communication how many of them are still left.

Those affected received their notices of termination by e-mail on November 4th. Above all, the area of ​​​​software development is affected by the layoffs, Verdi quotes an ex-employee who wants to remain anonymous.

The terminations were then also sent by post on November 16th. But before that, those affected had already organized themselves into unions.

Victims join a union

As Verdi writes, the employees concerned had already joined the union after receiving the e-mail notice. They were particularly upset that nobody had spoken to them before and they were simply fired.

Unfair dismissal lawsuits are now in the works. These are managed by the affected employees of Twitter in Germany. together with the union.

Twitter in Germany should have a works council

But the efforts of the terminated employees are not yet complete. Because they now want to set up a works council for Twitter in Germany. Because the colleagues who remain in the company should be “better protected against further quick shots from Elon Musk”.

They are accompanied by Hikmat El-Hammouri, who has already set up a works council together with the employees at TikTok. The employees in the social media companies “always believed that they didn’t need something like co-determination, shop stewards or works councils”.
