Gazelle and Sparta as most popular e-bike brands

There are an estimated total of 23.4 million bicycles in the Netherlands. Of these, 3.4 million bicycles have pedal assistance up to 25 kilometers per hour. These bicycles are also called electric bicycles. Research by Multiscope has shown that Gazelle and Sparta are the most popular brands of electric bicycles.

Gazelle as market leader

Two years ago, Multiscope conducted a similar study. This showed that Gazelle and Sparta held 16 percent of the total market share. In second place was the bicycle brand Stella, with 12%.

This year, Gazelle is the market leader, with 17% of the total market share. Sparta is number 2, with 15% of the market share. Followed by Stella, with 12%. This percentage is unchanged from two years ago.

Great satisfaction e-bikes

The Dutch are very enthusiastic about their electric bicycles. When asked to rate the e-bikes, an average score of 8.5 was obtained. More than 83% of e-bike users gave a score of 8 or higher. The advantages mentioned in particular are the good condition of the battery and the limited maintenance of the bicycle.

E-bikes are mainly bought in the physical store

A striking finding from the research into e-bike experiences is that electric bicycles are mainly sold in physical stores. No less than 86% prefer to buy an e-bike in a shop. The more powerful e-bikes up to 45 kilometers per hour – also known as speed pedelecs – are mainly purchased online: 60%.
