Gas, oil, wood: Experts reveal how you can save expensive energy costs

Gas prices, the cost of heating oil or firewood have risen to unimagined heights. The coming months of the heating period are extremely expensive times for consumers. The heating mirror reveals how much more expensive it can be on average. If you use the right savings strategy, you can hope for savings despite the high prices.

Gas, electricity, oil: This is how expensive heating will be in 2022

After a comparatively moderate increase in heating costs in 2021, the current year 2022 will see a never-ending endurance run. The costs for almost all types of heating in Germany are exploding. While the wholesale price for gas, for example, has multiplied, the big bills for private customers are still to come.

The non-profit consulting company co2online is already calculating in the heating mirror what additional costs consumers have to expect on average: Accordingly the costs increase for heating an average apartment of 70 square meters in an apartment building with gas central heating by 550 euros for the year 2022, an increase of 67 percent compared to the previous year. In 2021, the costs have already increased by 20 percent (source: co2online):

According to the forecast, 53 percent more costs will be incurred for oil heating in 2022 for the same apartment size. This is expected to correspond to 495 euros. Even with a heat pump operated with electricity, co2online assumes 53 percent additional costs, heating with wood pellets will probably be 54 percent more expensive in 2022. “What is already a lot on average can be significantly more in individual cases”, says co2online managing director Tanja Loitz.

Consumers should therefore – if possible – prepare for hefty additional payments in the coming year. Consumers who heat with district heating have currently been hit the hardest. Here you can expect price increases of just 8 percent for the current year.

If you heat with electricity, a balcony power plant can turn out to be a real gold mine:

Despite the explosion in heating costs: You can make a lot of money by saving

However, the heating mirror that co2online publishes also results in considerable savings potential. “The willingness to save energy among the population is currently higher than ever. At the same time, the heating mirror shows that 90 percent of households in Germany still use too much heating energy”Loitz continues.

According to co2online, the average savings potential is between 640 euros for a 70 sqm apartment and up to 1,220 euros for a single-family house with 110 sqm. “Effective heating” is one of the ways to reduce costs. But also energetic renovation is mentioned. Tenants can therefore hardly achieve the full calculated savings potential on their own. co2online also offers further tips for saving heating costs and an individual heating cost calculator at www.heizspiegel.de.

A notice: The calculation of co2online was still before the announcement of the gas price brake and the end of the gas surcharge carried out. Even if no specific details have yet been determined, the measures are intended to alleviate the financial burden on citizens. The savings effect could therefore increase, or your actual costs might not pile up quite as high as feared.
