Futuristic technology could save lives

Researchers have designed an artificial intelligence that can design new proteins itself. In the first tests, these managed to kill bacteria. The method could be used for faster drug development in the future.

AI develops proteins against bacteria

With the deep learning language model ProGen, researchers from the USA have succeeded in producing new antibacterial proteins. According to Salesforce AI Research, initial laboratory tests have shown that these are able to kill pathogens. Just like the model found in nature, the artificial proteins destroy the cell wall of bacteria.

The proteins designed by the AI are similar to the lysozyme enzyme group, but are not found in this way in nature. 73 percent of synthetic proteins are supposed to breached a test cell wall have. With natural proteins, which were also used in the study, the success rate was only 59 percent. Two of the AI proteins are said to be able to kill living E. coli bacteria.

At best, the findings could ensure develop new active ingredients faster to permit. According to Salesforce AI Research, the deep learning language model is already being used to develop drugs. Multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis are currently the focus here (source: hot online).

AI can not only help in the development of proteins. You can see how artificial images are created in the video:

AI: Language models help medicine

Not only Salesforce AI Research is researching medical applications of AI language models. Also Google’s Deepmind AI Alphafold is working on proteins, as is a team at the University of Washington developing a program called RoseTTAFold Diffusion. The Chroma program of the US startup Generate Biomedicines takes care of particularly large proteins.
