Free seems to be preparing Wi-Fi 6E for the Freebox
Orange’s Livebox 6, recently available, offers Wi-Fi 6E and Bouygues Telecom will be offering its own Bbox in a few days. The next on the list could well be Free with its Freebox.
Soon Wi-Fi 6E on the Freebox?
By rummaging through the lines of code of Freebox OS, Internet user Tiino-X83 found elements making a link with Wi-Fi 6E. This particularly concerns the 6 GHz frequency band. As a reminder, Wi-Fi has so far used the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. With Wi-Fi 6E, we also find the 6 GHz band. This tri-band system allows in particular to have a better throughput.
Wi-Fi 6E is coming (soon) to Free!

In 2020, Xavier Niel mentioned the case of the Wi-Fi network. “Wi-Fi 6, which has an interest, is the one that will bring us more speed. Which Wi-Fi 6 will bring us the most speed? It’s Wi-Fi 6E. Why ? Because it adds a third frequency band”had declared the boss of Free.
Two years later, there is still no Freebox with Wi-Fi 6E. But it seems to be in preparation. It remains to be seen how this will turn out. Will a new box be needed? It is very likely. Or, will it be possible to simply connect a module to the Freebox Delta (or even the Freebox Pop) to have the new wireless network? Free says nothing yet.
