Flex technology or the foldable phone

Technology continues to innovate: fully connected homes, content monetization, Metaverse by Mark Zuckerberg… moreover, the mobile telephony sector is no exception. One of the flagship devices of the past two years is the foldable phone. We are not talking about the clamshell cell phone, but a phone whose screen can be unfolded and folded at will. A true object of curiosity, its design is unusual and arouses the interest of consumers. Is it a good idea to buy it? How does it work ? We tell you everything.

What is the foldable phone?

What makes it different is that its screen can be folded. Even in this position, the screen remains active and it is still possible to use the features of the smartphone. The technology used on this type of smartphone is a jealously guarded secret by telephone manufacturers and until now. Indeed, only manufacturers such as:

  • the giant Samsung;
  • Huawei;
  • Microsoft with the Microsoft Surface Duo;
  • the Motorola Razr;

offered it on the market. For the moment, there are few devices that work with this technology. Also, their prices are still quite high.

The selection criteria for buying a folding phone

New technologies in smartphones and tablets are numerous and flex technology has its advantages and disadvantages. Here are the things to consider before getting a foldable phone.

The folding

We can see that there are three types of folding:

  • wallet mode;
  • folding in three;
  • folding in half or clamshell folding.

Regarding the first two types of folding, they are only possible on a large screen of at least 8 inches. We see these folding methods on tablets or phablets (phone-tablet).

Screen resolution

The fact that the smartphone screen can bend has no effect on the quality of the image resolution. This can reach Full HD and offer quality videos. For example, in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G, its screen incorporates the 6.2-inch Amoled Infinity Flex technology, one of the best smartphone screens of the moment.

Screen size

It is difficult to apply the technology flex on a phone with a narrow screen. There is indeed foldable phones with a screen of less than 7 inches, but for optimal comfort of use, it is preferable to opt for the large screens or the tablet format.

Solidity

You may be reluctant to use a foldable phone: what if the screen cracks? If it breaks? Fortunately, the builders have understood all the possible risks. The materials used are strong and stylish, the screen is often constructed from plastic fiber, and the body of the phone is made of metal. However, it must be handled with care: the foldable part is the most fragile of the device.
