Fitbit prepares a smart ring. What can he do?
The company Fitbit, which manufactures smart watches and bracelets, has patented one unconventional smart device – a smart ring. The Wareable portal informed about the news.
The patent revealed that the ring will allow the user to measure the level of oxygen in the blood (SpO2) and will support NFC technology, which means that it is likely to support the Fitbit Pay service for contactless payments.
However, the patent speaks not only of an ordinary SpO2 sensor, but of a photodetector sensor that allows transmissive measurements. This type of sensor can measure blood oxygen levels more accurately than SpO2 sensors used in some smart watches, and the quality is close to that of medical instruments. Fitbit also plans to use it to measure blood pressure or blood glucose levels.
Smart rings already exist on the market
The idea of creating a smart ring may sound silly at first glance, but several such products are already on the market and are popular among a specific group of users. The most popular is the Oura Ring, which specializes in sleep and health monitoring and has been involved in studies related to COVID 19.
Fitbit Sense
Motiv Ring and Amazon Echo Loop products were also known, but they ceased production. It is possible that this was due to little interest, which can be a problem for Fitbit.
So far, it’s just a patent
So far, it’s just a patent, which means we may never see a Smart ring from Fitbit. Technology companies routinely patent ideas for new products that never hit the market. But it is interesting to see in which direction Fitbit plans to go.
